Being gluten free I’m always in the look for healthy alternatives to wheat flour, and this Almond Flour is not only a great alternative to wheat but also very tasty and very versatile.
Almond flour can be used for desserts, cakes and breads, and is so easy and economical to make that to me it makes sense using this super healthy alternative to the many gluten free flours in the market.
HOW TO MAKE ALMOND FLOUR RECIPE
Make Almond Flour at home with this easy and quick method. Almond flour is a great alternative to the traditional over processed white flour because of the healthy benefits of almonds and is a great alternative if you have a gluten and wheat free diet or are looking for a low carbohydrate flour.
- 2 cups Almonds
- Boiling water to soak the almonds
Add the almonds to a container
Add boiling water until all almonds are completely covered and soak for 10 minutes
Drain the almonds and start to peel each almond using your fingers. The skin should come out easily.
Once all almonds are peeled place them in a tray evenly spread out and let to dry overnight
Next day when all the almonds are completely dry, blitz them little by little in a food processor until getting an almost fine flour.
Once all the almonds have been processed, use flour!!
1. I like to leave the almonds to dry overnight, but of you're in a bit of a rush you can put them in the oven at 100 C for 1 hour or so. This will also help in how fine the flour end up being. 2. I like to leave my flour with some tiny as to have some texture when I use it, but this optional. See video to see how small I leave mine.
HEALTH BENEFITS OF ALMOND FLOUR
Home-made almond flour is made of 100% almonds and nothing else, making it a super nutritious and healthy flour to use instead of the gluten-rich over processed regular white flour. Almonds provide:
Vitamin E, iron, magnesium, manganese, potassium, calcium, good for your heart, blood sugar management, low carbohydrate, gluten free and low glycemic score.
So substituting it for your regular white flour provides great healthy benefits on our day to day.
WHAT TO DO WITH ALMOND FLOUR
There many things you can do with almond flour, desserts like cakes or pies. You can also make breads or if you’re like me I like to toast it and have it in the morning like granola with dairy free yogurt.
Next week I’ll be posting a 5 minute almond flour bread recipe that has no kneading, no proving and no baking, yes you heard right, NO BAKING!! With only 3 ingredients, of course being of them almond flour.
And in the next few weeks I’ll be also posting a rich chocolate cake made 100% with almond flour, so stay tuned!!
HOW LONG DOES ALMOND FLOUR LASTS
The first thing to bear in mind when making home-made almond flour is where to keep it. I like to keep mine in ceramic or glass containers with lids because I feel they keep natural things better than plastic, but if you only have plastic container then by all means use the ones you have.
I like to keep mine in the fridge, some people keep it in the pantry or cupboard, but because it has been processed I feel it keep fresher in the fridge.
Keeping it in the fridge means it will last longer, so I had mine for 2 weeks at the time and it kept fine.
The other option is to make small batches when is need it, this way you’re almond flour will always be fresh.
